Experimental Testing of Scarf Joints and Laminated Timber for Wooden Boatbuilding Applications

Timber construction has recently seen a significant regain of interest across range industries, owing to contemporary concerns for sustainability. In the marine industry, historic principles traditional wooden boatbuilding remain present, with empirical rules still common practice, as is case scarf joints. Moreover, laminated wood made more attractive and efficient thanks modern adhesives. However, progress in structural analysis, these assemblies can now be refined based on scientifically informed evidence. This paper employs destructive testing tackle two distinct cases. On one hand, strength plain joints function their slope evaluated. other effectiveness adhesives ascertained purpose manufacturing. The results are compared both solid mechanical properties assumed by scantling regulations, revealing differences. novel research findings provide better understanding fundamental timber principles, supporting designers builders alike making choices while promoting safer regulatory compliance enabling future development small craft standards. Applications beyond design boats also anticipated, instance sustainable buildings architecture.
